In the Emirate of Dubai, the unified smart payment system for all public transport is the Nol Card, administered by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). A single Nol card pays for travel across the Dubai Metro (Red and Green lines), Dubai Tram, public feeder and intercity buses, marine water buses, and RTA street parking meters.

The Four Categories of Nol Cards

  • Nol Silver Card (Most Popular): The standard contactless card for residents and frequent commuters. Costs AED 25 (which includes AED 19 instant e-purse balance). Holds up to AED 1,000 for registered cards and AED 500 for unregistered cards. Valid for 5 years.
  • Nol Gold Card: Provides exclusive access to the luxury Gold Class carriages on the Dubai Metro and Tram. Costs AED 25 (includes AED 19 balance). Fares charged are exactly double the regular Silver class rate.
  • Nol Blue Card (Personalized): A registered smart card with user photograph and identity verification. Essential for securing subsidized rates: 50% discount for school and university students, 50% discount for senior citizens/residents, and 100% free travel for People of Determination. Costs AED 70.
  • Nol Red Ticket: A disposable paper-based smart ticket designed for tourists or irregular riders. Costs AED 2 for the paper ticket and can be loaded with up to 10 single journeys or 5 daily passes.

Dubai's 7-Zone Fare Structure

Dubai is divided into seven transit zones (Zones 1 through 7). RTA calculates fares based on the number of zones you traverse during a single journey (referred to as "Tiers"):

Journey Tier Zone Coverage Silver Card Fare Gold Card Fare
Tier 1 Travel within 1 zone (or ≤ 3 km crossing into an adjacent zone) AED 3.00 AED 6.00
Tier 2 Starts in 1 zone and ends in 2 adjacent zones AED 5.00 AED 10.00
Tier 3 Exceeds 2 zones (travel across 3 or more zones) AED 7.50 AED 15.00

The 30-Minute Free Transfer Rule

When switching modes of public transit (e.g. from the Dubai Metro to a feeder bus, or from one bus to another), the transfers are treated as a single continuous journey if:

  1. You tap into the connecting transport mode within 30 minutes of tapping out of the previous one.
  2. A maximum of 3 transfers are permitted within a single overall journey.
  3. The total journey duration does not exceed 180 minutes.

Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

Attempting to enter a Metro station with less than AED 7.50 on a Silver card (the fare gates will refuse entry)
Using a Silver card inside the dedicated Gold Class cabin (RTA inspectors issue an immediate on-the-spot fine of AED 100)
Failing to tap out at bus card readers (results in being charged the maximum Tier 3 fare of AED 7.50 for that route)
Not knowing that standard Nol Silver and Gold cards expire 5 years from issuance date

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum balance required on my Nol card to enter the Dubai Metro?

Your Nol Silver or Gold card must have a minimum balance of at least AED 7.50 (the cost of a maximum single-tier journey) to pass through the entry turnstiles of any Dubai Metro station.

Can I pay for RTA public street parking using my Nol card?

Yes. Most RTA physical parking ticket meters accept Nol Silver and Gold cards. Insert the card into the meter slot to deduct the hourly parking fee directly from your Nol e-purse.

What happens if I forget to tap out when getting off a Dubai public bus?

If you fail to tap out upon exiting an RTA bus, the system registers an incomplete trip and automatically deducts the maximum Tier 3 fare of AED 7.50 from your Nol card.
